Happy Fathers Day, Dad

Today is Fathers Day so I suppose I owe my dad this post, so here goes.

I’d like to think I have always had a pretty good relationship with my dad. He is a smart man, wise man and a kind hearted man. I don’t know of anyone else who would go out of there way to help me the same way my father does.

None of us are perfect, that is certain, but that just makes us who we are. My father has gone through a lot, medically. My father literally ticks due to a mechanical valve attached to his heart from his second open heart surgery back in 2006. He has also had several major seizers and even lost his licence because Doctors couldn’t figure out why he was having them.  Our family has gone through a lot because of this and I know he feels terrible about it. But like we always do, we made it through and still love each other.

For a couple years in a row, come June my father and I would launch his boat into the ice cold waters of Great Slave Lake for its first cruise. We often went early enough in the season that we could still drive right out to the ice sheet still lairing most of the lake. It was something me and him did together. Something that I won’t forget.

Now even though I now live 1500kms away from my family, my father still finds a way to help me out. He is still looking out for me.

I hope he knows how much I value family.

Happy fathers day, dad.

Hey my dad ticks too! He had his artificial valve put in 22 years ago, and he’s still ticking away today with no replacements, so I hope that gives you all some comfort. I remember finally getting so used to the ticking that we didn’t even notice it any more, but then finding it hysterical when someone new would start listening at their wristwatch or looking around for the loud clock in the room.
