Big Bed Build Bonanza

It has been 4 weeks since I moved down to Fort St John and all this time I have been sleeping on an Air Mattress. I’m not complaining, actually I can sleep on almost anything and it still be comfortable. That being said I thought it was time to get a real bed. That didn’t last long since I wanted something smaller and compact for my room.

I ended up getting a neat little sofabed from Jysk. It fold in a couple ways.

From the Yellowknifer #yzf

Well I finally got around to reading Wednesday’s Yellowknifer and I thought I would let you know some of my thought on some of the articles I read. I don’t always like doing this, although I am very opinionated, because I don’t always know the full story and I for one don’t want to make an idiot of myself on my own site. That being said I wont get to much into any of the articles I will touch upon.

  1. Okay for the first article we have the issue of the City not supplying bus passes to Reddi-Mart and Sutherland’s. I’m not going to get into what the city is or isn’t doing properly about the matter, I am just going point out some issues I have with this editorial. So the first sentence in this article is a question as to why the city wants to send people on a “Easter egg hunt” for passes. They go on stating that City Hall is not on the moon and that it wouldn’t take much for a city employee to go the block or two to the convenient stores with new passes. The issue I have with this is if it is so easy for a city employee to walk to the stores to drop off new passes what is stopping you or whoever from going to City Hall yourselves and getting the pass there. There would be no need for a hunt of any kind, If you have lived here longer than a day you should know where it is. Plus when you get there you can ask them for yourself why they are doing about the matter. I mean if it is only a block away, which it is, it shouldn’t be a problem. I realize that the City does still state you can get them at the stores but lets be frank (Hi, I’m Frank from Canmore!) everyone, every business and every government has it quarks, so it is just something we have to live with. I know I will get heck for this and I could go on  and on about how both sides of this argument are in the right but I will leave it for now and let you all think about it.

  2. Now on the our Territorial Government and their lack of Scholarships. HA! This one is really touchy because of the amount of money that is going toward the Olympics. I’m not picking a side on this ranging war but I want to share with you a philosophy I have. If you want it, you pay for it. If you want to be a doctor or a lawyer then you should be ready to pay for it yourself no matter the cost and it ain’t cheap. Do you think that is unfair? You don’t get handouts in life, no one does. To those that say they can’t afford school if it were not for an academic scholarship I call BS. If you truly want to go to school for 6,7 years than you should be able to pay your way through even if it means consuming huge amount of debt. There is a price to pay for everything. But like I said this subject is touchy so I don’t want to dig myself a huge hole of my own that I can’t climb out of.
  3. Dear Pierre………..
  4. To Mr.Kakfwi……..
  5. Last but not least. Lets look over the development of the old Extra Foods property shall we, no seriously a view from above would be perfect. Perfect to see that this city will never learn. Developing the inside of that building and making it in to another mall is fine BUT WE NEED PROPER PARKING IN THIS TOWN. When will developers learn. Who’s idea was it to put a bank and a lube-X in the middle of good old fashion parking space anyways. I pretty sure there have been several conversations around town about how horrible the Walmart/Tim Hortons parking lot is and how we need to improve it but yet it seems as though the same mistakes are being made again. What are you thoughts?

And so concludeds my rambling and ranting about Wednesdays articles in Yellowknife’s Yellowknifer. Share you thoughts, good, bad, whatever. I realize I have touched upon some touchy subjects so give me your worst. Lets see how I make out with Fridays paper.

Social Networking Anyone?

I love Social Networking, not only that I love how they can all be intertwined. I recently wanted to find a way to only have to update my Facebook status or Twitter status but have them both show up the same. What do I do? I Google it, what else. I found a Facebook application called… Twitter that not only showed the status updates of the people I followed but pulled my status from Twitter and made it also my Facebook status. Greatest thing Ever! To top it all off I also have a Twitter plugin here in Firefox that allows me update my status directly from my address bar with out even being on the site itself. So now everything is updated from there. Awesome!

I feel like I literally live online, now if only I could work here as well. I would just move on in…….(Mr. I think you have gone crazy). So now not only do I spend pretty much every waking moment online (which most people would think is a waste of time, but I actually am doing something productive) doing productive things like research, blogging, etc. but now when I get bored I have Digg and Stumbleupon to amuse me for hours. Plus it is a great way to find those random interesting sites that you would have never found other wise.

You must be thinking “wow Bushman, that’s a lot of Social Networking and whats the point”. Yes and No, to someone who doesn’t do it, it is a lot. To someone who is also internet savvy this is not, there are still so many out there that I have yet to find. If you know any interesting one let me know. Now to the point! Pure Amusement, no I’m kidding. I have a dream, stupid maybe but still a dream, I would love to someday work online. Work online so I don’t have to always be in one spot. I would love to just drive around with satellite internet hooked up in my truck (that can be done) but anyways that’s another post. If I want to fulfill that dream I think it is wise to start building a reputation even if I don’t actually get there for another 10 years. I will always be online somewhere. Now I don’t know how this will affect me or not, but I don’t really use my real name. I’m sure some of my readers who I don’t know personally know it. I mean I did just post my stink’in Facebook Profile above. I just hope by building up The Bushman it will benefit me as a real person years down the line when I attempt to actual work online whether it is for my self or for someone else.

One last thing that I can not forget, but have already mentioned. The one thing I would not be able to live with out online. FireFox, greatest browser ever! I have several plugins which make life so much easier online. 1. Scribefire, which allows me to write blog posts directly from Firefox. So if I need to be looking through another site that has to do with the post I can actually be there. Instead of switching back and forth and losing my train of thought (which I can do easily). 2. WordPress Helper, this plugin and Scribefire are similar but different and I can’t use them at the same time. Helper is a little tab in the bottom right of the browser as well and gets me to my site, new post, new page, dashboard, etc quickly so I don’t have to go throw the process of logging on blah blah blah. Neat thing about it as well is it tells me if the site I’m on is powered by WordPress or not. Cool 3. Digg and Stumbleupon I have already talked about but they are in my tool bar. If I “Digg” the site I click digg it. Nough Said! If I want to Stumble, I just click stumble. I can also set what I want to stumble for and if I like it or not. Nough Said!

To sum everything up we have FriendFeed which is like a RSS Feed for every social networking site I’m at. This would be the best place to Follow me, it shows it all. It is also on my homepage.

If you would like to recommend a site please do so.

I’m The Bushman.

Looking in to it: Bushman

I was recently asked what is the mean of “Bushman”

Well before I looked into it further I always considered a Bushman as a person who enjoys or lived in the wilderness. Someone who possesses skills in the area of bushcraft. Things such as fire building, survive skills, camping, hunting, trapping, fish, etc. A Bushman could be also considered a woodsman.

As I looked into it I found what I considered a Bushman was correct but there were aslo other meanings. Here is what I found.

From Dictionary.com:

Bush⋅man

/ˈbʊʃmən/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [boosh-muhn]

  1. bushman One who lives or travels in the wilderness, especially in the outback.
  2. A member of a traditionally nomadic hunting people of southwest Africa.
  3. a woodsman
  4. dweller in the bush.
  5. a settler in the bush.
From Wikipedia:

1.The Nuk-luk (“Man of the Bush” or bushman) is a cryptozoological hominid reported in the Nahanni National Park Reserve near Nahanni Butte, Northwest Territories, between April and June of 1964, by John Baptist, several men, and a boy named Jerry. Several Dene from Fort Liard who were trapping at a river reportedly came upon the creature in April of 1964. It appeared strong-looking, and appeared to have a long, dark beard, wore torn clothes, and was 5 ft (1.5 m) tall.

In June 1964, near Fort Simpson around 9 p.m. a boy named Jerry reported a similar creature. It had black hair on its head, upper body, and legs. It also had a long, brown beard that reached its waist, and wore ankle-high boots, a mooseskin loincloth, and had a stone club in its hand. These creatures have been reported for hundreds of years and are said to have bootlike footprints and whistling calls. They have been reported from the Northwest Territories to Yukon to the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska.

I like this one, not only because it is close to Yellowknife, but I have always had that idea of leaving society and live “out there”, using what is out there to survive. Don’t laugh I will do it one day.

2.The Bushmen, San, Sho, Basarwa, ǃKung or Khwe are indigenous people of southern Africa that spans most areas of South Africa, Zimbabwe , Lesotho, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Namibia, and Angola. They were traditionally hunter-gatherers, part of the Khoisan group and are related to the traditionally pastoral Khoikhoi.

The terms San, Khwe, Sho, Bushmen, and Basarwa have all been used to refer to hunter-gatherer peoples of southern Africa. Each of these terms has a problematic history, as they have been used by outsiders to refer to them, often with pejorative connotations. The individual groups identify by names such as Juǀʼhoansi and ǃKung (the punctuation characters representing different clicks), and most call themselves “Bushmen” when referring to themselves collectively.[2]

This is somewhat relent to my idea, hunter-gathering. Its what you have to do while your out there in order to survive.

3.Bushman is a fictional character appearing in the Marvel Universe. He is the oldest nemesis of Marc Spector, whose secret identity is Moon Knight. He is interchangeably also known as Roald Bushman.

Bushman has no superhuman powers, but he is an expert in guerilla warfare and highly proficient in the use of most conventional firearms. He has peak human physical strength and is highly athletic and agile. He sometimes uses metal teeth so that in hand-to-hand combat he can draw his enemy in close to him to tear the enemy apart with his teeth.

I think this is funny, who knew a Bushman could be a villain in a comic book.

And Just for Kicks here is what it says about a Woodsman:

The word woodsman, meaning man of the woods, can be applied to any person coming from or living in a wooded area. Woodsmen is the plural form.

Woodsmen are stereotypically nature-wise persons who hunt for their food and live simply. They are often portrayed as male, bearded, knowledgeable about plants and animals, and possessing highly developed tracking and survival skills. Characterized by their log cabin homes, woodsmen are also sometimes stereotyped as old fashioned, and possibly eccentric.

Woodsmen and hunters were placed in special military units in many armies up until modern times. In many cases, the names of these units are still used today.

The image of the woodsman, with his full, thick beard, flintlock musket, and hatchet, is often romanticized in movies and books. The 1980s movie Continental Divide made fun of these stereotypes in the context of a love story.

So there you go, now you have a better idea of what a bushman is.

Home to Home

We got out to the cabin today for cleaning. We got there at about 12:30 and got a fire going right away. The cabin warmed up very quickly dispite the fast it was -39*C outside.  Our goal was to clean the inside and set out mouse poison. As I found the hole the mice created I would shove poison in them and then board them up so hopefully we can fix the mouse problem. There was a lot of crap out there and garbage and it took us a couple hours to get completely clean and just as it was getting dark we had it done. Of course there was time in there to have lunch, which scot so proffensionally cooked ontop of the stove. Here is a link to all the picture of the day Flickr Photos
