Artist, Fox and Wide Open Spaces

Marcus Jackson FoxI have said it before, that I’m much more drawn to photographing people. There is something so powerful about capturing them, their surroundings and their personalities.

My dearest friend, Marcus, is an amazing artists and the idea I had in my head to capture part of his style was at night in a dark open space. We found ourselves out on an ice road minutes outside of Yellowknife. There is a single fill flash to camera left and one flash behind him, which created the harsh shadows of the chair.

Down to the snow falling, this image captures exactly what I wanted it to. His stare while clutching the deceased animal, sitting on a chair in the middle of darkness.

Erika Lange and her Hats

I have been wanting to get into more portrait photography for a while now, but have always lacked a subject. I’m not confident enough with myself to pursue it yet without fooling around and seeing what I come up with. This was my chance to practice, with Erika who approached me about the idea.

Serious Erika

Erika recently got some new hat or as we Canadians like to refer these head toppers as, toques, and wanted some pictures with the hats. I thought sure why not, I need to improve on my skills. The other thing I have often struggled with when it comes to portrait photography, is location. I don’t know the area too well and am sometimes unsure as to where to go. Luckily, Erika did. She live in what they call the Old Fort. It is one of the original Fort St. Johns, yes there were many, before it moved up and out of the valley of the Peace River. So surrounding her house is forest with trails that lead to the river, perfect for photos.

Personally I like candid photos better. I like catching moments, not having to try to create them. I think a photo will make a bigger impact on the viewer if the subject isn’t looking at the camera, as if it isn’t even their. That being said, if a person want to expand the opportunities they must be diverse and that is my plan. I will admit I did start getting into the shoot when I started directing Erika where to look, where to point her head and watching how the light was hitting her face. I’m improving, I promise. Who is next?

I’m Still Young, I’m Still Hip

This gentleman was walking past the pizza joint I was at in Jasper and I grabbed this photo of him. I like to imagine what kind of people are in my photos. Each person is different and is captured a different way.

This gentleman, I feel is young at heart. He had a grin on his face that made me think he was going “yeah man, I got this, I’m cool.” Then the ball cap and shades top it off. He was confident as he walked down the main drag of Jasper.

Ice Cream Man is waiting

Like I mentioned, on Google+, I want to do more random portraits of people and here is the first. I still am dealing with the huge fact that I’m to shy to go up and ask to take a person if I can take their photo, but I hope to over come soon.

I believe this man was waiting for his wife as she shopped along the main drag of Jasper Alberta. He looked at peace, with his ice cream.

This photo was inspired by the photographer, Thomas Leuthard, who is a “street photographer” and writes 85mm.ch. I like his style and it was why I I wanted to explore the random portraits more. ISO 100, 50mm, f/3.5, 0.0004.
