I have tried to get out to Hidden Lake every other weekend this winter and that seems to be working. I went out for Friday night and most of Saturday this weekend and now I feel exhausted but it is always fun.
This was one of my hang-ups living in Fort St. John, I didn’t get out in the woods much. It could have been for several reasons: I didn’t know where to go, there wasn’t a place to go, no one to go with or maybe I just had a general lack of ambition to do so down there. None of those are a problem here in the Northwest Territories. It is my domain, where I grew up, what I know.
There is not just one cabin I could go use, there is 3, all on different lakes spread out outside of Yellowknife. Even though my snowmobile broke earlier this year I have friends who lend me theirs. I’m never without access to the great outdoors and the ambition is there.
Hidden Lake is one of my favourite places to escape to because there is no contact with the outside world. In other words no cell phone service. The cabin itself is well setup with a propane furnaces that doesn’t require any maintenance other than changing out the bottles. Even then three 100lb bottles hooked up into the system allow it to go for several weekends without needing to be changed.
The cabin is located on a ridge of rock at one end of this lake and even though I have gone to this cabin now for almost ten years I finally climbed the ridge this winter. Check out the view:
While there is a lot of time for good R&R we do get some work and maintenance around the cabin done. This past trips project was to get some scrap wood out from behind the outhouse so we could have a bonfire. While I was cutting a trail in towards the outhouse I got the snowmobile stuck – this in no way reflects the performance of the snowmobile, just the driver 😉 – so we had to cut it out.
It did eventually drive right out of there once we cut out the brush that was wrapped around the skis.
Moving on to a more recreational activity, no winter outing at a cabin in the Northwest Territories would be complete without some Ice Fishing and Hidden Lake offers some of the best. Ciscos are often a good choice for bait when Ice Fishing and sure enough out of our three holes we caught a Lake Trout.
Finally of course would be the Northern Lights or Aurora. Getting out of Yellowknife with all its light pollution generally means the aurora will be good and sure enough – when I was actually awake – they were.
Guys, it is getting scary. I’m becoming more and more domesticated by the day. This time I’m growing herbs. I have basil, parsley, oregano and chives growing.
It all started back in February after I moved back to Yellowknife and couldn’t find any Tarragon in the grocery store. Actually I couldn’t find much, the section for fresh herds and spice was minimal at best. Just the basic herbs could be found, for a cost.
I was kind of annoyed about the stock each store had. Yes, I realize where we live but I don’t see fresh herbs any different from many fruits or vegetables. I suppose the demand just isn’t there for the herbs so they are not brought it regularly.
My conclusion to this predicament was to grow my own. I went to the local Canadian Tire found a planter tray and seeds of various herbs. I actually couldn’t find the some of the seeds I really wanted – tarragon – but got the common ones.
That afternoon in February I planted those seeds into the tray, watered them and let them sit in a warm place.
Over time I would check on them, water them and move them around the house into the warm places. Sometimes they would be in the basement of the house by the woodstove or during the day on a window with sunlight beating down.
Eventually they needed to be moved in to proper planters so they could continue grow and flourish. The extend hours of light a day also seemed to help.
This is the first time I have ever done something like this so I wasn’t without help from an experienced green thumb. I started to notice certain aspects of the process. As the herbs grow they take in more and more water, obviously. As well they need more room to grow so transplanting them was a must.
As for as I’m aware all of my herbs are growing normally and successfully so I’m not sure what I could do differently. I planted more seeds this and will see how the addition of more sunlight affects them. Wish me luck.
Ifttt is an online application that will help your social workflow. It has been out for sometime now but I had never gotten around to using it until today.
The way ifttt works is you create tasks for doing different things around the Internet to make your life easier.
Currently I have a task in place that helps me schedule tweets throughout the day. Normally I read all the blogs I follow, first thing in the morning and most of the time there are several I want to share but at 6:30am in the morning there aren’t many people awake. Additionally that would be 10 or so articles I want to share and doing it all in 15 minutes is pointless.
The way my task works is when I star or favourite an article in Google Reader on my iPhone or iPad- or Flipboard as it uses Google Reader – it automatically gets entered into Buffer, which is an app that schedules my tweets throughout the day. The reason I need ifttt to do this is because Buffer does not have an add-on for mobile or Flipboard.
I can’t wait to discover what else I can. You should try it.
James MacKenzie is another long time Yellowknifer I have come to know over the years. He is still early in his photography carear but if you look at any of his photos you know he will do great things.
One weekend in February 2012 we both ended up at a mutual friends cabin out on Hidden Lake. The skies were clear and the aurora were promising to be good, so naturally I brought along my camera. Of course James did as well. I don’t think he strays more than 5 feet without his.
It was the first time I had gone out and shot the aurora with another photographer and I was thrilled. It is one thing I read up information on the Internet, it is another to be able to bounce ideas and information off another phtotog who is right beside you.
We have many conversations that weekend about photography, which is what was happening when I took the below portrait. My settings for this shot were: 1/200sec, f/1.8, ISO 200, 50mm and -2/3EV.
I used the natural light coming in the window to the right of me to brighten up James’ face but also had to compensate for it as I wanted to show what was around James as well. That is why I have the Exposure Compensation at -2/3 and even still it didn’t seem like enough.
In addition to the settings of the above shot I think it displays who James is. Smiling while reviewing his photos from earlier that day.
Here is another shot of James in action at the Long John Jamboree:
