[podcast]http://static1.squarespace.com/static/53888dece4b0b0e91301d66b/t/55ba2b73e4b016dd4e34fda4/1438264279030/kw_michellemacdonald_2.mp3/original/kw_michellemacdonald_2.mp3[/podcast]

You would be surprised at how many businesses, organizations and artists don’t have websites out there. There are valid arguments as to why an entity doesn’t have a website and that they don’t need one to survive, but Michelle and I disagree.

In this episode of the KyleWith Podcast, we talk about what the point of a website is in 2015, how you can actually build one yourself easily, some tips for doing it and how to host it.

KyleWith: Michelle MacDonald on Social Media and Podcasting

[podcast]http://static1.squarespace.com/static/53888dece4b0b0e91301d66b/t/55b33fb4e4b03d9124ed7418/1437810635214/kw_michellemacdonald_1.mp3/original/kw_michellemacdonald_1.mp3[/podcast]

Welcome back to the KyleWith Podcast. It has been a long time since we had a new episode of the show, almost 3 years in fact.

Now recorded out of my awesome mobile recording camper, the show will feature different creative and entrepreneurial people from around Yellowknife, the North and the world.

However, on a reoccurring basis we will have a regular guest on the show. Michelle MacDonald is a friend of mine and also a big advocate for Social Media communications. Her musings can be found at ykuptowngirl.com. When Michelle is on the show we will be talking about different topics regarding social media, digital communications and website and how they affect small businesses and organizations.

This first introduction episode with Michelle is a little rough. It was our first time recording and we went in without a plan. Don’t judge our skills on this episode. Listen, laugh and then hang on for the next episode where we really get into a groove.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to Subscribe via iTunes.

Don’t let the fact I butchered his last name stop you from checking out Kyle Marquardt’s work, because it is quite good. Kyle, like many photographers I have talked to, discovered his interest in photography at a young age. For Kyle it was high school. He tells me he took pictures of everything and had his camera with him everywhere. After high school he decided to pursue it further and go to Ryerson University in Toronto for Photography.

Kyle’s career started out much like anyone else’s that would want to get into professional photography at a young age, he became an assistant. Whether for a wedding shoot or in a studio, he would be there helping. He also tells me in the show, that a large part of learning was making mistakes and he did make some along his way.

Apkatok Island

So how did Kyle end up going to the Arctic, Antarctica and around the world? Well it all started with a Travel Company he volunteered at. He would make them slideshows and edit their photos, but eventually they saw his potential and offered him a trip to the Canadian Arctic, so off he went. Then of course one thing lead to another, which he explain in full detail in the show.

If you ask Kyle what makes him think of “warm and fuzzy”, he’ll probably tell you his over 50,000 Google Plus followers. He is extremely humble about the attention and makes the daily effort to post a photo across all networks. For him the Social Networks are a great way to get his photos out there, but also a good learning tool to get people feedback.  He is also more than willing to teach what he has learned and often has a Photoshop tutorial on his blog for others to use.

It was a real pleasure talking with, Calgary based Photographer, Kyle Marquardt. He is on a journey that is exciting and he is earning it. To hear all this and more, be sure to listen to this episode.

Be sure to check out his website/blog, Facebook Page, Twitter and of course Google Plus.

KyleWith: Painter Robbie Craig

[podcast]http://static1.squarespace.com/static/53888dece4b0b0e91301d66b/t/55b33b79e4b0a06c6decf2f0/1437809600689/kw_robbiecraig.mp3/original/kw_robbiecraig.mp3[/podcast]

Robbie Craig’s Northern Projects were first introduced to me by mutual friend Dave Brosha. Robbie’s art can be classed as impressionism, which is very similar to well-known artist Graeme Shaw. He says though that his paintings are more abstract with lots of bold colours. Robbie likes to describe it as funky and wild.

Robbie Craig – The Three of Me
6 years ago Robbie and his wife moved to the Northwest Territories, to the community of Wekweeti. There he and his wife managed the school for a year, before moving to Behchoko to also work in the local school. They have been there since, but as of June of 2011 moved right into Yellowknife as they were expecting their first child and since the painting sales had started to pick up.

Like many others that I have talked with, Robbie’s art is his passion and was a hobby before anything else. He explains to me in more detail in the show that he needed a hobby when not working during the long winter nights, out in Behchoko. That was when he rediscovered his passion for painting.

Since then his art has really taken off. He has sold many of his paintings and even taught a course at one of the Diamond Mines north of Yellowknife. Robbie talks about so much more in the show about what and who inspires him, how he creates a painting and what is in the future. So be sure to listen.

The Show

This Thursday, December 8th, Robbie will be having a show in joint with one of his inspirations, Graeme Shaw, at Visual Effects in Yellowknife. Facebook Event here. He will be featuring some work that has yet to be seen, so it promises to be a good show. You should go.

Be sure to check out Robbie’s website and his Facebook Page.

KyleWith: Photographer Dave Brosha

Dave Brosha is one of the photographers I have always looked up to. I taught me the basics of photography; knowledge which I use everyday. So why I find he such a great photographer is not only that he is a great photographer, but also that he is willing to teach those who want to learn.

Dave’s adventure started in the Resolute Bay, which is in the Canadian Arctic, where he wanted to started taking picture to showcase to his family back home. His photography slowly progressed and he also moved to Yellowknife, NT. He realized it was a passion and his and wanted to pursue it. He slowly took on clients and built up his name while still having the stability of a 9-to-5 job. Finally he took the plunge one day and quit his job and started doing photography full-time, he hasn’t looked back since.

Nowadays, Dave isn’t limited to Yellowknife, where he and his family lives. He has traveled as far north as Alert, as south Australia and has been to Egypt twice. He has traveled to these places on writing assignments for magazines or to document a friend living an adventure. He makes the point those that he is very fortunate to have the opportunities that he has had.

We go much more into detail about how his business grew and where he has been in the show. Dave also shares with me what is in his bag and who inspires him. So be sure to listen.

Be sure to check out his website and his blog and is ever-growing Facebook Page.
