KyleWith on CBC Daybreak North talking Google+

After talking a lot about Google+ (by the way I’m not done yet) the past couple days, I was approached by CBC Daybreak North host Robert Doane about doing a quick chat about the new network.

We prerecorded it yesterday afternoon and it aired this morning (July 19, 2011) on their show. I think it went really we and I feel I touched upon all the points I really wanted to make about Google+

The one thing I wish I had a better answer for though, is how rural areas can use Social Media. Obviously the first thing that comes to our minds is how slow their Internet maybe, but I don’t think that is as big of excuse anymore. Using a Social Networking site really don’t take much internet and more and more places do have 3G cell service now. I hope to work more on putting in place a way more rural community can connect on some of these networks.

Have a listen and tell me what you think.

New Fort St John Skateboard Park Scene

Wednesday evening I attended what I’m going to call a Fort St. John Skateboard Park Committee meeting at the Fort St John City Hall. The reason for this committee is because there is a group of people in this town that are advocating for a new skateboard park, as the old one is now 10 years old and has several issues.

Hails Elizabeth Photography

The group is being headed up by Adam Kirschner, a veteran skater and life long Fort St Johner. He has rallied together not only many of the local skaters and bikers, but also community members and business owners like Brent, Andrew and myself.

Adam hopes that by building up this group, getting charitable status and collecting donations from local businesses, the group will be able to approach the City about getting the proposed new land and some money to help fund the project. So currently the group is meeting every two weeks to get details figured out. Details like a website, communications, design ideas, statements etc. Below I mention some of the topics brought up during this past meeting.

The Old Park Problems

What I gather about the current park in Fort St John is it is to small for the number of people who use it on a daily basis. It also is becoming a safety hazard as it has many cracks in the concrete.

Potentially from the communities view point the skatepark is a place where mischief happens, which is true, but it is not done by those who actually bike or skateboard at the park. This is being done by lowlifes, who want to do nothing but smoke, drink and cause havac.

Potential Solutions

Although in the early stages, many solutions were talked about for the new park. As it will be a new park the issue of the cracks in the concrete will be taken care. Design is also a big factor in making sure the park can accommodate all those who wish to use it. Size is one aspect but making sure the park flows properly for all who use it is also a big part of the how it should be designed, which is why a company like NEWLINE Skateparks will be consulted to design the new park.

The location is proposed to be in a very central area of town with high visibly from all angles to detour any riff raff from hanging out at the park and causing problems.

From this Point

At this point there is still a lot of little details that need to be ironed out before a big push can happen. Specifically a charitable status so the group can accept donations. Proper brand also needs to be done, this includes building the website, get flyers out, developing the mission/vision statement and so on.

Finally I will leave you with why I am taking part in this group even though I don’t use the park. There are a few reasons actually. The first is because I want to be more of a contributor to the community and help in the ways I can. I’m particularly interested in helping out in this group because I have somewhat of a background in this area, which leads me to my second reason. In Yellowknife, because I have a brother passionate about skateboarding, I briefly helped out with a skateboarding movement there. It is actually a skateboarding ministry that helps show the community that skateboarding can be positive and they are also hoping to build a new park for Yellowknife in the future.

I will leave you with that. If you think you can help or have a question for me, hit me up through my Contact Page and be sure to “Like” the page on Facebook.

Peace Glass has my Windshield Covered

Getting a windshield is something I hate doing. Having grown up in the Northwest Territories, specifically Yellowknife, I’m afraid that any bit of driving will get a crack in my windshield. In Yellowknife, in the winter, the gravel roads, all the roads. Everyone has a crack in the windshield, it doesn’t matter what type of vehicle you drive. That’s why I try to put off getting one as long as possible because you’re most likely going to get a crack right away.

The windshield and my Jeep when I bought it was Artie a roadmap of its own. There was cracks streaking up and around the passenger side. Luckily the driver side didn’t have any, so I was able to see out without any problem while driving. That was until I was driving back to Dawson Creek from Yellowknife.

As I was barreling towards the BC border from Alberta an oncoming truck and its trailer slightly swerved into a gravel area of the road. The result was this trailer picking up a fist size rock. And flinging it straight across the road. It bounced once twice and three times as I saw it coming towards me. I tried to swerve towards the other lane to avoid it from hitting the driver side, but I didn’t swerve enough and it hit the very edge on the passenger side resulting in a massive spiderweb. Glass shards sprayed everywhere on the passenger side seat.

I kept driving to Dawson Creek, and eventually Fort St. John that night. As it still wasn’t affecting the driver side, I wasn’t ultimately concerned about it. I knew I wouldn’t drive it much here in town but I knew it needed to be done. So finally on Thursday I called Peace Glass, a local glass store. They quoted me a good price and said they could do it the next day, so I said sure.

Peace Glass

If you went up close to this hole in my windshield you’d find that the only thing holding it all together was the protection plastic. Now this was unsafe of me, yes. Many people would probably get mad at me, but nonetheless I only really drove it to work in my house, which if you know is only a block.

I left my Jeep with them while I was at work and when picked it up at around 3:30pm. The process of doing this was easy and the staff were very friendly. I’m sure this is the same in most places, so that didn’t really strike me as special. What struck me as special was when I sat into the vehicle. I was in shock, not only had they replaced the windshield they had cleaned my entire dashboard and center consul. That I was not expecting. Maybe other company’s do it as well, but I was certainly impressed with Peace Glass. It was spotless and smelt wonderful.

Peace Glass

I would recommend Peace Glass to anyone. No they didn’t pay me to write this post, gosh they’re not even on twitter, I doubt that know about blogging. I chalk this up to me writing about great local businesses, , that I come across. Although his great as I think they are maybe you had a different experience. Share with me your experiences below in the comments.

Fort St John Social Media Day

I’m am disappointed to say that Fort St John is not celebrating Social Media Day. It was something I really wanted to head up and get something going, but unfortunately on this day, June 30, 2011, I am actually driving back from Yellowknife to Fort St John.

Social Media Day is a day when over 1300 communities across the world get together with themselves offline. The people within these communities get to meet each other, they connect, they talk, they enjoy each others time. According to Mashable Social Media Day is a day to celebrate Media becoming Social.

Just because we are missing Social Media Day doesn’t mean we can’t ramp up our Social Community in Fort St John. I would like to see us become even more of an online community than we already are. Since I’m sure most of the people who will read this are already participating on Twitter and Facebook, I want you, over the next week, to get someone you know on Twitter. Show them how it works and show them why it can actually beneficial to them.

By next year I want Fort St John to celebrate Social Media Day like we should!
