We had Thanksgiving at my house

For the past two years I have been away from home for Thanksgiving but I didn’t mind, I really enjoyed myself. Both times I was taken in by someone else and took part in what I call a Misfits Thanksgiving, where most of the people have no family in the community but come together with friends. I am very thankful for those people.

So this year I wanted to host my own. We had a small group of us who enjoyed the most amazing meal ever. I don’t think I have experienced a more relaxing day in a long time, than I did on that Saturday.

You will note in my many photos below that most of them have my good friend, James Rubec, in them. He was by the house most of the day prepping and cooking Roxanne, our turkey. While I wasn’t taking photos I cooked up several dishes of my own, there is just no evidence of that happening.

For the 6 of us we had so much food and my fridge is completely packed the morning after. Besides the turkey and stuffing that James cooked, I cooked my famous Scallop Potatoes and a Sweet Potato Pie… and bread that we forgot to eat. We also had maple glazed brussels sprouts, a nice fresh salad, a thanksgiving pizza and a homemade Pumpkin Cheese Cake.

The day, the food and the evening we all amazing. I’m thankful that it all happened.

Pictures on the Wall make my Home

I have been living in Fort St John over 8 months now and ever since moving I have been in a bit of a limbo. I am currently in my 3rd apartment, I know, bit much for only 8 months but that is the way it is. I never was able to settle into a place and make it my own.

I am now in my own apartment, it isn’t the most glamours place, but it is mine. I have slowly started furnishing it. Recently I bought a kitchen table and chair and a toaster. All I really need now is a couch to go with my chair.

Family Photos

It has actually been tough for me living in limbo. I’m a homebody, I love my home, I need a home. I like having a place I can retreat to when I need to. A place that is mine, that I can control.

Photos make a home more comforting to me, so over the weekend I printed off some photos. The photos if you hadn’t of guessed are of people. Oh and those people happen to be family.

Family Photos

Looking around my living room and see these photos, along with a bunch of other ones I put up, makes me feel like I’m in a real home again.

What makes your home, home for you?

At Home At Ikea

I guess I forgot to post these photos from my trip to Edmonton a couple weeks back. We of course did the northern thing and visited Ikea, we actually did get a boardroom table for our office. I always enjoy walking through Ikea and dreaming of the possibilities and then looking at prive tags and going “THERE IS NO WHAT IN H*LL” I can afford any of this.

Either way, some of the rooms are neat. They are clean, elegant and modern, something I so desperately want in a home someday. I envision a house – apartment – condo to have all hardwood flooring, stainless steal appliances, a gas stove and to be full automated. That is the big ticket for me, I want to have a highly efficient – green if you will – home that I can control from my phone.

I will get more into my dreams of a home some other time, but for now tell me what your favourite thing to do in Ikea is.

UPDATE: Fire in the Apartment

Well this is interesting. 12:20am on Thursday I wake up to a fire alarm going off in my apartment. Time to evacuate.

I’m sitting in my truck, on my computer, waiting to see what is going on.

UPDATE: Okay Time for the whole story, since it is 1 AM in the morning now. This evening I decided to stay at work, and finish projects I was doing. This wasn’t totally unusual, but I haven’t done in a while. I didn’t actually arrive at home until about 11 o’clock. At which point I wanted to do a little more work and watch couple videos, while falling asleep. So then comes 12:20 AM, where I’m half asleep.

I see flashing, if there is one thing I am sensitive to it is light, and I start to wake up. as I start to wake up, thank you the noise. It is the noise of an annoying fire alarm.  At first I don’t take it seriously, I sit up, I think about it, and I realize I can hear other people moving outside. That’s when I jumped up and put on a shirt, and pants. And I think, by the way I’m being a really bad example for this, should I take my computer? Well of course, so I quickly grabbed my computer bag which already had my computer in and left the building. First thing I do, jump in the truck and jumped onto twitter.

In about 15 min. 2 fire trucks, fire rescue vehicle, three RCMP and one ambulance were on scene. People were wandering around everywhere wondering what was going on. I sat my truck, blogging and twittering.

Eventually after 20 min. of watching the firefighters go up and down the stairs and through apartments they let everyone go back in. As I was walking back in, I asked one of the firefighters what it was. Turns out someone forgot they were cooking stove and it was a cooking fire. I would like to stress the point that it was 12 midnight, when most are either ready for bed or are at work.

So thanks to some other people in this apartment, I’m now going to be extra tired tomorrow. Good night.

UPDATE 2: According to EnergeticCity.ca the alarm was triggered by someone who forgot about their hot dogs on the stove.

Getting Firewood for the House

If there is one thing I miss about not living in this home is the woodstove. The heat from a woodstove is like no other. It is nice and warm and comforting. Furnace heat is nothing like it.

So while I’m here in Yellowknife for a couple weeks I keep the stove going all the time, which means I’m going through a lot more wood than normal, therefore have to bring in more on a daily basis.
