Lighting my Social Media Fire, again!

No doubt over the last 6 month my Social Media usage has gone down and I have lost interest. I have an awesome job but it does not directly involve Social Media full-time at the moment, this will eventually change.

So for me attending Social Media Camp has relit my Social Media Fire again! It is something I believe in, something I see the benefit of but it is also something I think is fun. Creating content, blog posts, photos, podcasts and the community I am involved with.

More so I just finished an interview with a guy(sorry I forgot your name) from WebmasterRadio.fm about Social Media in the North and by north I mean the Northwest Territories.

For a long time I have considered myself a Social Media Evangelist for the north, but like I said I lost that mentality. Just doing that interview though, that was directly related to Social Media in the north, brought back all that passion I have for it.

I remember back in early 2008 and how there were only 5-6 of us on Twitter and Facebook had only been around for a year. We have a come along way and again I want it to grow.

There are barriers, like technology. A lot of the NWT communities doesn’t have high-speed internet of support for smartphone, but you know what! Back in 2008 I rarely used Twitter and Facebook on a smartphone and when I did it was via Text Message, which all the north has.

So my new goal, which is what has me fired up and getting the NWT connected via Social Media. I don’t know how yet but I believe a good start is creating NWT content.

Fort building on Vancouver Island

One of the many things I liked to do as a kid was build forts out of everything. I’m sure most kids are like this. Well I started off with the parents couch, which was perfect for forts. The cushions were square and firm, perfect for building up. I later moved onto tree-forts and I had a lot of those in the backyard.

Well this afternoon I got to relive some of my childhood and build a fort on Long Beach out of drift wood. I’m on Vancouver Island up on the west coat at Long Beach, which is south of Tofino.

My fort is built strong to withstand the elements. It has several large logs as support beams and is right up a wall of brush. I also started to dig down in the sand a little as I knew I would not be able to make the roof very tall.

Arched logs at the front of the structure create the arch of the roof and support the centre beam that runs to the back of the structure. From there cross logs were places as the roof.

With the sand I used to dig out inside I used as a small barrier on the opened to make it small to again protect from the elements. In the above photo you can also see how I used twine I scavenged from around the beach to bind the arch.

Here you can see the slightly dug out area inside the fort. You will also note the giant gaps in the roof. Now if I were to actually want this to protect me from the weather I would want a short distance away to the bush and gather several branches to place over these logs to make them water tight.

It is a pretty cool little fort and hopefully a kid comes along and spends sometime playing in it.

See I could be on survivor no problem. 😉

Another Adventure to Victoria

Once again I am off on another adventure and this one I have been looking forward to for sometime now.

I actually haven’t really traveled any where since January when I moved back to Yellowknife but that was only from Fort St. John. There seems to be enough for me to do in Yellowknife to make me feel like I don’t need to go anywhere.

Yellowknife from a plane

I’m off to Victoria, BC this time around. I will be attending the Social Media Camp once ago and figured I might as well go a few days early and see the sites.

Friend and coworker Martin will be taking me up to Long Beach and Tofino. We might also get to go to Pender Island.

I have to say even though I don’t think I could ever really live anywhere else I really enjoy Vancouver Island.

It was tough leaving Yellowknife this morning. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, sunny and 22*C. Yellowknife summers are like no other.

Now lets see what I can get up to on Vancouver Island!

Building up to biking the trails

Yellowknife has been having some ridiculously nice weather lately and fingers crossed it doesn’t end.

I have been biking into work steadily for about three weeks now with much joy. When I started my time to get from my house to my office, which is about 3.80kms, took me 13 minutes. As of lately my time has gotten down to between 10-11 minutes with my fastest time being 9 minutes 11 seconds.

My legs have been getting stronger and I am noticing that I’m not panting as much when I finish the ride. It is becoming more enjoyable than anything else. That being said I got my first taste of the rocks again today and it wasn’t even that far.

As I was riding home I took a quick detour up the start of the hiking trail around Frame Lake. Simple rocky surface up a small hill. It nearly killed me climbing. The bike did well bouncing off one rock to the next but my legs were not prepared to deal with gravity. I ended up stalling and falling off a couple times. It was pathetic but I’m not giving up. This is just the start.

The bike I am riding is a Specialized Chamber Pro 29er and has been supplied by the awesome people of in Grande Prairie. They have been very kind to me and their service is amazing. Go Like their and you’ll see what I mean.

Red Pepper and Garlic Jelly Adventure

I’m getting into the preserves business and this is no joke. My mom is known for her amazing jams and few other preserves. Every year you can find her at the local craft sales around Christmas time and if you are lucky you’ll find her at a garage sale or two.

She has reached such popularity that some people who don’t even know her first name will stop her on the street and try to order more jams.

All year round my mom is collecting the materials and making more jams. She will scour the store for the best deals on the mason jars as well as watch for fruit to come on sale. She has even gotten to the point where she has basically built a celler, which is cool and dark, to keep all that she makes.

So how do I fit in, well first, after seeing her success I just wanted to grow her business into something real, not just found at the craft sales. But with my love of cooking as well, and if you hadn’t of guessed my mother is my biggest mentor, I too wanted to try my had at the preservatives but not the jams and such that she makes. No, I want to make the jelly spreads.

Making Red Pepper Jelly

To help me understand the process of jarring stuff my mother helped, well actually she did most of the work as she too had never really made jelly.

We were making Red Pepper and Garlic Jelly.

To make the jelly we had to finely chop up 2-cups of red peppers and 3 cloves of garlic and mix it in with vinegar, sugar and pectin.

Making Red Pepper Jelly

The hardest part for me was to remember how long it had to boil and skimming off the foamy bit once it was boiled.

Making Red Pepper Jelly

What we did find, was that once the mixture was boiled our recipe instructed us to quickly pour it into the preheated mason jars but when you do this all the peppers float to the top. We found that if you let it cool for a moment or two you have a better chance at evenly dispersing the jelly in the jars.

Now what can I make next.
