Why I love local food

This video depicts exactly how I feel about food. And while I may not use wheat flour that is local I still mix and bake all my bread right here.

Peace Glass has my Windshield Covered

Getting a windshield is something I hate doing. Having grown up in the Northwest Territories, specifically Yellowknife, I’m afraid that any bit of driving will get a crack in my windshield. In Yellowknife, in the winter, the gravel roads, all the roads. Everyone has a crack in the windshield, it doesn’t matter what type of vehicle you drive. That’s why I try to put off getting one as long as possible because you’re most likely going to get a crack right away.

The windshield and my Jeep when I bought it was Artie a roadmap of its own. There was cracks streaking up and around the passenger side. Luckily the driver side didn’t have any, so I was able to see out without any problem while driving. That was until I was driving back to Dawson Creek from Yellowknife.

As I was barreling towards the BC border from Alberta an oncoming truck and its trailer slightly swerved into a gravel area of the road. The result was this trailer picking up a fist size rock. And flinging it straight across the road. It bounced once twice and three times as I saw it coming towards me. I tried to swerve towards the other lane to avoid it from hitting the driver side, but I didn’t swerve enough and it hit the very edge on the passenger side resulting in a massive spiderweb. Glass shards sprayed everywhere on the passenger side seat.

I kept driving to Dawson Creek, and eventually Fort St. John that night. As it still wasn’t affecting the driver side, I wasn’t ultimately concerned about it. I knew I wouldn’t drive it much here in town but I knew it needed to be done. So finally on Thursday I called Peace Glass, a local glass store. They quoted me a good price and said they could do it the next day, so I said sure.

Peace Glass

If you went up close to this hole in my windshield you’d find that the only thing holding it all together was the protection plastic. Now this was unsafe of me, yes. Many people would probably get mad at me, but nonetheless I only really drove it to work in my house, which if you know is only a block.

I left my Jeep with them while I was at work and when picked it up at around 3:30pm. The process of doing this was easy and the staff were very friendly. I’m sure this is the same in most places, so that didn’t really strike me as special. What struck me as special was when I sat into the vehicle. I was in shock, not only had they replaced the windshield they had cleaned my entire dashboard and center consul. That I was not expecting. Maybe other company’s do it as well, but I was certainly impressed with Peace Glass. It was spotless and smelt wonderful.

Peace Glass

I would recommend Peace Glass to anyone. No they didn’t pay me to write this post, gosh they’re not even on twitter, I doubt that know about blogging. I chalk this up to me writing about great local businesses, , that I come across. Although his great as I think they are maybe you had a different experience. Share with me your experiences below in the comments.

Age Old Debate on Local Reporting

Let me set the room for you. It is 11pm, it is dark with one desk lamp on shining down on my keyboard. All that could be heard is the typing of keys and the soothing sound of The Coffee House in the background.

Alright now that I have done that I will get on with what I originally came here to talk about. The age old debate of Local Reporter vs. Local Blogger. I know it is a big topic for a guy like me who doesn’t know much about either, but I figure I’ll give it a shot and see what comes of it. I am hoping to come from a different angle this time around. That angle being passion.

I definitely think that both parties have passion. I don’t think either would do what they do if they did, but I will explain what I think I see. A Local Report has a passion for the job. They take pride in reporting the news, writing a good article and the general process of getting it out to the people. A Local Blogger has a passion for the place. They take pride in where they are, the people that are there and what is going on. They enjoy meeting residents and old timers, hearing the history of a place and how things got to the way they are.

Now each can be positive and negative and I don’t stand for one over the other. A Reporter may not have as much of a deep connection with a place, this could lead them to not care as much, to only be concern about the new and allow them to pick up and go onto other things. On the other hand a Blogger who has been around for a while, knows the community and its people could be bias. It would also be hard for a Blogger to leave their community, much like I did.

I guess you could say there isn’t really a competition between the two, because a Local Blogger is much more like a Columnist than a Reporter. That is why I think we need both. We need reports to deliver the news as it is, with fact checking and hard quote. While the blogger will take the story further and learn about it and the people involved.

What do you think? Am I just rambling or am I making sense?

Profiling Resaurants

One of my goals for YkOnline.ca is to profile Yellowknife’s Food Scene. I love food, you have no idea how much I love food. Good food, that is properly repaired, that not only looks amazing but tastes amazing. I’m at the point where I will try anything, anything. My latest kick is mushrooms, sauteed mushrooms to be exact. I could just sit and eat them by themselves. So with my obvious passion of food and even more obvious passion for writing about anything Yellowknife, I want to try and profile our Yellowknife’s Local Eateries.

That being said, I’m not going to review them like a food critic would. I was careful to say “Profile” as I’m not in the business of handing out negative comments. That is not to say I wouldn’t include tips on things that could be improved or something that wasn’t right for me, but the overall feel and appeal of each profile would be positive.

Here is a list of restaurants I would like to profile over the next couple months:

  • Fuego’s International Cuisine
  • The Trader Grill
  • Latitudes
  • Le Frolic
  • Le Hertiage
  • Bullocks Bistro
  • The Wildcat Cafe (when it opens)
  • Coyotes Bar & Grill
  • Diamante

I’m sure I have forgotten some, so please comment them below. Have any suggestions, let me know.

If you are interesting in joining me on this adventure to profile Yellowknife’s restaurants, just give me a holler.
