No Caffeine For Me!

'Caffeine Weapon' photo (c) 2009, Nick Webb - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/I’d really like to know how caffeine works for some people because it doesn’t work for me.

Lately I have been going at things hard. I’m out of bed at 6am, at work by 7am, putting in 8ish hours there and then onto another project, then comes some downtime with dinner and then I get a second wind and back to working on something until 12am ish.

It is basically a go go go mentality for the entire time and very little of my energy has to do with caffeine.

I have seen coworkers come into the office and need that cup of coffee and need that caffeine boost before human interaction but I have no idea what that is like.

Lately I have tried to drink coffee in an attempt to improve my alertness in the morning but the fact of the matter is it does nothing. Whether I drink a cup or two of coffee does nothing for me. That being said first thing in the morning is my time to excel, I’m already high energy at that time.

Where I’m not is from about 12:30pm – 3:30pm, that is when I start to slow down before my second wind. I blame this on working 8 hours straight in an office through. I don’t go get the fresh air I should.

At the end of the day I do drink a diet pepsi or two, which I’m sure has some level of caffeine in it. But again I could drink one seconds before going to sleep and it wouldn’t effect me in the least.

So how I keep operating for 17-18ish hours a day I don’t know.

My first big proposal: NTT

I have been at KELLETT now for just over a month and half and I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect when I started. I didn’t really know what I was going to be doing orwho I would be working with, I just knew it was a good decision and that it was.

Yellowknife is a small town with a competitive marketing industry which is why the past couple weeks have been somewhat awkward for me. I’m so use to publicly shouting out what I am doing on a regular basis, but with this I couldn’t. To make matters more awkward I have a good relationship with many of the people that work with these other companies and I certainly hope work aside we can continue that.

What I am referring to is of course the Northwest Territories Tourism Account, which KELLETT has submitted a proposal for.

I’ll tell you right off the bat that tourism, especially in the NWT, is something that I have a deep passion for. It is something that I have thought about for many years stemming back to before YkOnline.ca, to the days when I worked for a tourism operator. This place is my home and I want to share it with others.

As the proposal was coming together I was ecstatic to be apart of it. There were so many aspects that were getting me pumped about the future. The first was all the really creative ideas we talking about as we were building the proposal and of course the second was the team. I have come to learn that the team I’m working with is one of the best and no matter the project they will be a blast to work with. The late nights with them at The Black Knight are fun too.

I know no matter the outcome I will work my best to do great things and to think different.

To kind of show some fun in what we were doing I came up with the idea of the following video, shot and edited it together. It is staring friend, James Rubec, as the hyper active northern delivery boy.

I ask that you share this post or the video around to help spread the word that KELLETT and myself are in relentless pursuit.

A Bloggers Burden

My intentions are good, I promise. And I read all the How-to-blog, blogs on the internet to make sure I do it right. And I know that consistency is not king. Consistency may be queen, or prince or even joker.

With a new job come new responsibility, and my what great responsibility it is. That being said, come the evenings I’m a vegetable. I don’t seems to have the effort to accomplish anything on my list of awesome-things-to-do-in-the-evenings-while-not-doing-anything-else.

I also seem to sleep a lot. I fall asleep around 10pm and wake at 6am. That is 8 hours, not sometimes I stay up an hour later, but it still seems like I sleep a lot. People tell me it is all about routine or exercising or drinking more coffee, blah blah blah.

Either way, productivity is at an all time low in the evenings. I need to fix this, because I got lots of stuff I want to finish. Rebuild YkOnline.ca, write posts for YkOnline.ca, write a letter to Fort St. John, write about my adventure in to gardening, take more pictures. Yeah I got a lot to do.

So then you ask, why is it that you seem to be able to write this post, babbling on about not being able to write, when here you are writing about it.

Well that is a good question, you see, it is 6:45am. As I have always been, I am 10x more productive in the morning.

This has been the dialog in my head.

The Motion Media Temp Office

Oh yeah it is a hotel room with 6 people working on their computers. Hey just because we’re at a conference doesn’t mean we stop working. Wait isn’t it Sunday night, well I guess normal people don’t party on Sunday nights either.

Why can’t I work anywhere!

Earlier today a web development company, much like the one I work for here in Fort St. John put it out on twitter, that they were looking for a web manager. Now I have no idea what that includes, but it did bring up some ideas.

I re-tweeted it and then a lot of other people in Yellowknife were suggesting that I apply. I’m of course torn, I have such a good job down here in Fort St. John and an awesome friend space, although small. This got me thinking a lot about Yellowknife, and I can say that I do dearly miss it.

I miss my family, I think I have to say that. I miss the rocks and the lakes. I miss the atmosphere, the city in a small town. I miss a lot of things about Yellowknife, I do want to go back someday. I just don’t know when that will be.

This got me thinking though, why can’t I go back. Why can’t I do it I’m doing now and work from wherever I want. I decided to take a look at what I do in a day. I answer e-mails, I talk to clients, I act as technical support, I work with websites and I create content. There are other things that I do, but those of the gist of things. From what I can tell most of those things can be done from anywhere, after all we do work in the world of the Internet. With technologies like Skype and GoToMeeting, it should be perfectly possible for me to work remotely. I should be able to Skype consulting calls with clients as needed.

I’m happy with the position I am in at work and I hope my employer is as well. I hope to develop my position in the future, that will allow me to move around as I need to or as I want to. In my line of business I don’t see why I couldn’t have clients all over the world. I truly believe that’s the way this type of business is going. I don’t want to have to situate myself in one location permanently.

It seems like a lot to ask for a 20-year-old, but if I work towards it I don’t see why wouldn’t be possible. – WMRGUMEAJ3HC –
