Some questions about Government Advertising in Newspapers

This story presents some questions such as:

  1. All the GNWT pulled was their job ads, which was just space on a page that was sold to them by the papers. Anyone could buy this space. Why was this specific paper so dependant on one advertiser?
  2. How can we blame the GNWT for pulling their ads and moving online? Moving online is not something new. It has been happening for years now, reoccurring business planning should come into play to evaluate a situation and a business’ stability.
  3. Why does this article not show statistics of from both sides. Number of jobs found online vs. in print, number of readers of print vs. visitors to the new careers website.

At the end of the day, while it is the Government, it is still business. If you can save money and get better results elsewhere, why wouldn’t you do that?

I’d do more but there is a cat

2013-11-07 19.37.27

Fresh look. Clean look. Simple look. Over the past couple months my approach to my own person blog and writes has simplified. I once wanted a place that told you more about me than the average person wants to know about anyone.

I found it was cumbersome to write when there were so many distractions, and if I couldn’t even write properly, who would want to read it. So I started to scale back.

From two columns to one I took this site and from there I decided it was time I cut even more out and switched themes to this sleek coat. Nothing but words on a paper… or white background.

House update with pictures

It seems like more than a month in this new home, but it isn’t even that yet. I took possession of my new house on September 30th, 2013 and in the time between then and now I’ve done a lot… of moving.

Apparently I owe more stuff than I could have ever imagined. I’ll always remember that time I moved to Fort St. John with nothing more than a few boxes. Now I have an entire uHaul truck of “stuff”.

In 27 days I made several trips moving stuff from old house to new house, built an office desk, drove to Edmonton, spent a a combined total of 12 hours in Ikea, drove back to Yellowknife, built $1000 worth of Ikea furniture and setup the house. Here are some photos:

My favourite quote about learning

Over the weekend I built a desk and I got a comment that while I work as a project manager in front of a computer during the day, I somehow bake bread at the summer market and now build my own furniture. And I think I can chalk doing these things up to one quote that has always stuck with me by Walt Disney.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we’re curious… and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

Quote around here however we don t look backwards for very long we keep moving forward opening up new walt disney 224582

For whatever reason it has always resonated with me. It can be interpredend several different ways but when I think of it, I think it means never stop learning and seeking new knowledge.

I was never much for formal education but I LOVE learning. I decided one day to start building websites, I decided I wanted to be a bike mechanic, I was never a strong writer in school, but gosh darn it, I was going to create a blog and keep writing it for almost four years now, I decided I wanted to take photos of people, I decided I wanted to weld again and the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to spend much time with my uncle growing up, him in Ontario, me in Yellowknife, but when I visit, it is inspiring. He’ll take nothing and turn it into something and I was always fascinated by this.

I believe the only limitation we have is time. There is simply not enough time in the day. And equipment. That’s what made high school so great the access to the equipment.

I encourage other young adults to keep moving forward and opening new doors. I’m happy with where I am at only 23, but I understand the feeling of not knowing what to do. My advice would be to try, try and try again. There is not harm trying something new and if doesn’t work out, then you’ll know.

My first loaves of bread sucked!

3 thing I learned on the first day in a new house

It is approaching 10:30pm Monday evening and I’m comfortably sitting with my feet up, in my favourite chair, in my new bedroom. The walls around me are dark red, like the colour of dried blood, and the temporary sheets on my new queen bed are two different patterns of plaid. It is an odd scene but one I would expect when the space has only been owned by myself for 10 hours.

This is my home, my space, I own it, I will improve it, maintain it and grow with it. But that comes with time. The first thing I would like to do is point out 3 things I noted today whilst moving most of my stuff.

  1. Toilet Paper should be the first thing you move over to your new house. If it isn’t you’ll most likely forget it until the end or when you need it the most. It is strange what we take for granted.
  2. It will most likely rain while you are trying to move. Even when the forecast isn’t calling for it. It will rain.
  3. New House, New Sounds. You have to remember that your big investment isn’t just going to fall apart when the money transfers. Those noises are totally normal.

None of these point have anything to do with actually buying a house, but are points about moving nonetheless.

Here are some photos. Note the bedroom.
