Crafty Yellowknifers

Was kind of exciting today to get to check out what must be the largest craft sale in Yellowknife. The annual Elks Hall Sale happened a couple weeks earlier than normal and of course my mother had a couple table. Having a love of customer service and retail I helped out behind the table.

I must first say my mother’s Jams are well known in this town. I have never seen a product sell so fast at craft sale and had so many people come up to be saying how much they wanted it and have been waiting. It is funny how after doing craft sales in Yellowknife for 15 years she has really grown a name for herself as the Jam Lady. Each year it seems she makes more and more, different types and more variety, and each year it seems to sell quicker and quicker. I mustn’t forget to mention she also sells out at garage sales throughout the summer. I have been trying to convince her to open an online store or at least take orders.

Now on to the rest of the folks there. There are some really creative people in this town. More jams, baking, knitting, art, painting, etc. It is cool to see and I’m proud.

Northern Photographer Mittens!

We have all experienced it, we take our mit off to take that great shot and in the mean time our hold had freezes. Well what if I told you I found a solution that only freezes your trigger finger. Wouldn’t that be great. Well the good news is, I did find a solution.

Photographer Mits

Photographer Mittens are what they are called and I will tell you how to get a pair. First thing you need to do is print off the blog post I linked to below. It is the instructions, yes you need to get these made. The second thing you will need to do is find your Grandmother, Mother, Aunt, Wife, friend, child, a knitting group or a slave. Once you have secured said person, force them to read the instructions – oh and I would make sure they knit before you force this upon them. They might start to protest, but simply start dropping hits like “they’re for my birthday” or “Christmas is coming soon, I wonder what Santa will bring?” Those should win them over. If not ask…. nicer?

Knitting and some more – free patterns: Photographer mittens.

I thought these were perfect for those of us in Northern Canada. Although you may need to make them a little thicker for those all night Aurora adventures. They are from Norway so you should be fine. If anyone tries this, please let me know and share how they are.

New Gmail App for iPhone missed the mark for me

Read Googles blog post about their new app here: Introducing the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

It missed the mark for me though. On any given day I have 3 Gmail Accounts going, all with their own purpose. It all started with brand identity, I want an email address for those brand, so people know it is solid. Or at least that is my opinion.

Don’t get me wrong, the app is really nice. It performs perfectly and is much like the browser version on a computer. It is much like the G+ App with it sleek design and ease of use.

Try it, if you have 1 or a primary account. You might just like it.

Janet Pacey is a designer, a graphic designer, a print designer and just a creative person. This local of Yellowknife has recently moved from her house to her very own office in downtown Yellowknife.

Janet Pacey by Pat Kane Photo

Janet has a wide variety of work, one of the most notable is her stuffed animals called Ptarmi. They were created from a cartoon she created based on the arctic chicken, the ptarmigan. Ptarmi took off from Yellowknife and has been seen around the world. Janet tells me how Ptarmi got its start and where it is going. Possibly another character will be coming to life.

As our conversation continued we get onto the topic of business. Janet wasn’t always a small business owner so she reflects on what it took her to make the switch, as well as offers advice for those who are thinking about starting their own business.

She has a successful stuffed animal, amazing art and a wide variety of clients she loves working with, she also has a wicked sense of humour. Janet Pacey is a smart lady and she shares some good information that we can all use going forward.

Be sure to check out her website and like his page on Facebook.

Thanks for listening and don’t forget to Subscribe on iTunes or by Email here.

Don’t forget if you know someone doing something interesting (or another photographer or yourself) send me their info, I want to talk to them!

Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson

I have long since been a Michael Jackson music fan. I love his music, but I also love his dancing. I will admit I’m a closet dancer. Give me a greased kitchen floor, I can bust a move. Now that you have that image in you head lets move on.

If you watch interviews with many dancers and performers today they will tell you that Michael Jackson influenced them in some way and rightfully so, he was brilliant. After watching his music videos endless times I am fascinated with the world of dance and choreography. I’m envious of those who can move to the music and beat so well, in a coordinated manner. I can’t.

This Wednesday night in Edmonton, Ab I will be seeing Cirque du Soleil perform Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. I have never seen a cirque performance, but have always wanted to. They too have always fascinated me, taking dance and gymnastics and combining them into shows accompanied by music and themes is, again, brilliant. Needless to say I’m excited to see the show.
