A Written Off Weekend

Being positive and moving forward are the two things I stride for on a daily bases but occasionally I have to stop everything I’m doing for fun, work or personal projects to recuperate.

While the events of this weekend have not dramatically changed the way I live my life they have left an impression, just like many times before, that will not be soon forgotten.

I was once again reminded that life is not easy and will always be a challenge. I was also reminded once again of the strength of the person closest to me, my mother. Without a doubt I know that not many would be able to handle what she has gone through throughout her life. I praise her for her strength and thank her for it, as that same strength also lies deep within me.

Keep moving forward.

Happy Fathers Day, Dad

Today is Fathers Day so I suppose I owe my dad this post, so here goes.

I’d like to think I have always had a pretty good relationship with my dad. He is a smart man, wise man and a kind hearted man. I don’t know of anyone else who would go out of there way to help me the same way my father does.

None of us are perfect, that is certain, but that just makes us who we are. My father has gone through a lot, medically. My father literally ticks due to a mechanical valve attached to his heart from his second open heart surgery back in 2006. He has also had several major seizers and even lost his licence because Doctors couldn’t figure out why he was having them.  Our family has gone through a lot because of this and I know he feels terrible about it. But like we always do, we made it through and still love each other.

For a couple years in a row, come June my father and I would launch his boat into the ice cold waters of Great Slave Lake for its first cruise. We often went early enough in the season that we could still drive right out to the ice sheet still lairing most of the lake. It was something me and him did together. Something that I won’t forget.

Now even though I now live 1500kms away from my family, my father still finds a way to help me out. He is still looking out for me.

I hope he knows how much I value family.

Happy fathers day, dad.

Pictures on the Wall make my Home

I have been living in Fort St John over 8 months now and ever since moving I have been in a bit of a limbo. I am currently in my 3rd apartment, I know, bit much for only 8 months but that is the way it is. I never was able to settle into a place and make it my own.

I am now in my own apartment, it isn’t the most glamours place, but it is mine. I have slowly started furnishing it. Recently I bought a kitchen table and chair and a toaster. All I really need now is a couch to go with my chair.

Family Photos

It has actually been tough for me living in limbo. I’m a homebody, I love my home, I need a home. I like having a place I can retreat to when I need to. A place that is mine, that I can control.

Photos make a home more comforting to me, so over the weekend I printed off some photos. The photos if you hadn’t of guessed are of people. Oh and those people happen to be family.

Family Photos

Looking around my living room and see these photos, along with a bunch of other ones I put up, makes me feel like I’m in a real home again.

What makes your home, home for you?

When the Sun is Shining

Today reminded me of my childhood. It was a bright, sunny, crisp winter day here in Fort St John and it reminded me of home. As I was driving up and down streets I would see Father and Son shovelling snow, possibly making a “snow fort.”

Sometimes I’m afraid to grow up, to leave family behind. Sometimes I’m afraid I will forget all the good times I had with my family as I grew up.

Lovely the neighborhood.

Sometimes you just need to leave a though alone and let it unfold.

Joyous Christmas and Boxing Day

You can ignore my Christmas Eve post, it was written in spite and while I was not feeling well. I have moved passed that once again and had a pleasant Christmas Day. It was a Tradition day with Family. We eventually all got up at about 8am and started our Christmas Morning. It was a good time.

Christmas Turkey Dinner

After we had opened all presents, it was time for brunch. This was my specialty. What did I make? I prepped 2lbs of bacon, a pack of breakfast sausages, scrambled eggs and french toast, but that was not all. The French Toast and Eggs were both made with, wait for it, Egg Nog. I didn’t know what to except when adding this liquid to my cooking, but it turned out to be a marvellous idea. It had a splendid taste and a big hit with family and our two guests.

I’m very blessed to get all that I did for Christmas. My parents went above and beyond for me, and so did my brother. I got a lot of great things. Most notably a 1TB External Hard Drive for storage on the go, an Eye-Fi 4GB SD Card so I can wirelessly transfer photos from my camera to computer, a few pairs of Denver Haynes pants and sweaters, and several other odds and ends.

It seems like it has gone by so quickly and has it. I am a little disappointed I will be heading back to Fort St John on Wednesday. If I were to do it over again I would come back closer to Christmas and leave a little later.

How was your Christmas Day? What did you get? What was most memorable?
