Lighting my Social Media Fire, again!

No doubt over the last 6 month my Social Media usage has gone down and I have lost interest. I have an awesome job but it does not directly involve Social Media full-time at the moment, this will eventually change.

So for me attending Social Media Camp has relit my Social Media Fire again! It is something I believe in, something I see the benefit of but it is also something I think is fun. Creating content, blog posts, photos, podcasts and the community I am involved with.

More so I just finished an interview with a guy(sorry I forgot your name) from WebmasterRadio.fm about Social Media in the North and by north I mean the Northwest Territories.

For a long time I have considered myself a Social Media Evangelist for the north, but like I said I lost that mentality. Just doing that interview though, that was directly related to Social Media in the north, brought back all that passion I have for it.

I remember back in early 2008 and how there were only 5-6 of us on Twitter and Facebook had only been around for a year. We have a come along way and again I want it to grow.

There are barriers, like technology. A lot of the NWT communities doesn’t have high-speed internet of support for smartphone, but you know what! Back in 2008 I rarely used Twitter and Facebook on a smartphone and when I did it was via Text Message, which all the north has.

So my new goal, which is what has me fired up and getting the NWT connected via Social Media. I don’t know how yet but I believe a good start is creating NWT content.

My first big proposal: NTT

I have been at KELLETT now for just over a month and half and I’ll be honest, I didn’t know what to expect when I started. I didn’t really know what I was going to be doing orwho I would be working with, I just knew it was a good decision and that it was.

Yellowknife is a small town with a competitive marketing industry which is why the past couple weeks have been somewhat awkward for me. I’m so use to publicly shouting out what I am doing on a regular basis, but with this I couldn’t. To make matters more awkward I have a good relationship with many of the people that work with these other companies and I certainly hope work aside we can continue that.

What I am referring to is of course the Northwest Territories Tourism Account, which KELLETT has submitted a proposal for.

I’ll tell you right off the bat that tourism, especially in the NWT, is something that I have a deep passion for. It is something that I have thought about for many years stemming back to before YkOnline.ca, to the days when I worked for a tourism operator. This place is my home and I want to share it with others.

As the proposal was coming together I was ecstatic to be apart of it. There were so many aspects that were getting me pumped about the future. The first was all the really creative ideas we talking about as we were building the proposal and of course the second was the team. I have come to learn that the team I’m working with is one of the best and no matter the project they will be a blast to work with. The late nights with them at The Black Knight are fun too.

I know no matter the outcome I will work my best to do great things and to think different.

To kind of show some fun in what we were doing I came up with the idea of the following video, shot and edited it together. It is staring friend, James Rubec, as the hyper active northern delivery boy.

I ask that you share this post or the video around to help spread the word that KELLETT and myself are in relentless pursuit.

Meeting with the Clients

Feuilles de la passionYesterday I had the chance to meet with two different clients. It was great, because not only could I share my passion, but I could also see theirs.

What I love about working with clients and part of writing a community website, is you get to meet people from different walks of life. For some strange reason I love learning about what other people do. It doesn’t even matter what they do. Most of the time they are passionate about what they do as well, so the energy in the room just explodes.

Another thing I love about this job is how you never know what the next day will hold. Yesterday I worked with client on their projects, today I’ll be sitting in on a local talk show over at the radio station across the street from our office. Then I may be taking a camera down to a new kids entertainment centre, which is complete with laser tag, rock climbing and on.

Needless to say, I don’t think I’ll ever get bored.

Is it worth it?

Ugh. Having a conversation about reality stinks. I hate thinking about whether it is worth it or not, blogging and podcasting I am mean. I think about all the people who graduate high school and just jump in to lifeless jobs, just doing it to fund there nothingness. It bothers me because I’m actually trying something here. I work a job in the morning that I find rewarding, because I’m good at it and because people appreciate me. Then in the afternoon, I try and peruse my passion for Blogging about Yellowknife and Podcasting. I wholeheartedly believe that it will work in the North and I have some many ideas. This may be the down side, is that I have all the idea and can’t seem to manage my time properly to attempt them all. As you can see I have been slacking off on blogging on YkOnline this week, although I blame that on the fact the holiday season is over and I haven’t gotten back into a routine of doing it.

All of this makes me wonder if it is worth it. I know I haven’t put to much into it yet and I haven’t really done any hard work, but part of me says hold on, is it actually worth the time and effort. Will the result be worthwhile enough to get by.

So thinking about all these things got me to come down to 1 or rather 2 questions. I would love to know what your answers are to them!

  1. How would you make money from Blogging on a local blog?
  2. How would you make money from a Podcast?

Hearing others responses to these question my rekindle my passion and get me going away. Reality sucks.
