Ready for the road, I hope

Alright I’m ready to start my journey back up to Yellowknife, I hope. The highway is still closed, but I’m still not planning to drive that stretch of the highway until Thursday.

Just because I may be stranded, I mean who knows what happens, I am going to tow up the camper. Hang out in Enterprise, NWT where there is at least 3G if I happen to have to stay a couple days. Then again I plan for the worst, so I’m sure it’ll all be good.

I’m on Highway Watch

Tomorrow I am suppose to start my trek up to Yellowknife. In short I’m planning to do it in two days, so I can go slow and enjoy the drive. You know stop at all the “touristy” places along the way.

This planned trip of mine has now turned into a touch and go trip. I’m not sure what I am going to be able to do. Right now the highway between Fort Providence and Behchoko is closed do to thick smoke in the area from Forest Fires (about an hour out of Yellowknife). There also happens to be a lot of Buffalo along this stretch making it even worse.

I wasn’t planning to do that leg of the trip until Thursday, but I’m starting to think it might be a better idea to just make a run for it if the highway reopens Tuesday afternoon as planned.

So for now I’m on Highway Watch.

Happy Fathers Day, Dad

Today is Fathers Day so I suppose I owe my dad this post, so here goes.

I’d like to think I have always had a pretty good relationship with my dad. He is a smart man, wise man and a kind hearted man. I don’t know of anyone else who would go out of there way to help me the same way my father does.

None of us are perfect, that is certain, but that just makes us who we are. My father has gone through a lot, medically. My father literally ticks due to a mechanical valve attached to his heart from his second open heart surgery back in 2006. He has also had several major seizers and even lost his licence because Doctors couldn’t figure out why he was having them.  Our family has gone through a lot because of this and I know he feels terrible about it. But like we always do, we made it through and still love each other.

For a couple years in a row, come June my father and I would launch his boat into the ice cold waters of Great Slave Lake for its first cruise. We often went early enough in the season that we could still drive right out to the ice sheet still lairing most of the lake. It was something me and him did together. Something that I won’t forget.

Now even though I now live 1500kms away from my family, my father still finds a way to help me out. He is still looking out for me.

I hope he knows how much I value family.

Happy fathers day, dad.

In the Lightest Night One Writes

Mrs. Robinson softly plays in the background as I settle into my couch at 12:21am. The room is lit by one lamp situated behind me, right next to the entrance to my quaint one bedroom apartment. HDR flickr images rotate on my TV as a screensaver for my beloved Apple TV. The night is perfec… I just killed a moth.

Each Friday afternoon at 5:00pm I think to myself “I am going to get so much writing down this weekend. I’m going to write up some reviews of places in Victoria, events in Yellowknife, and more travel stuff. It is going to be great.” The Friday night passes with nothing but TV watching. Saturday morning arrive, adventures ensue, but not ambition to write appears. I lose hope once again that I am not going to accomplish any writing.

Then by fluke at 12:21am Sunday morning, after coming home from a house warming party ambition strikes. I start typing. About what, well nothing. I start writing about what is happening around me at that very moment. For that split second everything is perfect. Everything is simple and straight forward. My mind is clear.

No I didn’t write any of the things I intended to at the beginning of the weekend, but nevertheless, getting words on paper, regardless of what they are is an exercise in itself. As someone who blogs (writes) to get those words on page (paper) this is important to me.

I’ll sleep well tonight knowing I accomplished something, although smart, still something.

Good night world.

Fort St John Garage Sales June 18

A couple weeks ago I made my first Fort St John Garage Sale map using Google Maps. Each pin was a garage sale that was taking place Saturday morning. Now it is back and I have made the June 18 edition.

Using this map, for me, is amazing. I use my iPad to pull up the map so I can easily see where all the garage sales are. It would even work if you printed it out.

Here is the link:
