Scratch that, Take Two.

Remember that Rough Plan I mentioned about a month ago, well that is completely wrong know. I’m actually leaving Yellowknife at 5am July 28. So this is my last night in Yellowknife for 10 months.

It has been a slice but I need to go explore a little more in order to remember why I live in Yellowknife.

Today I spent the entire day running around town and packing. This morning I finally decided it was probably a good idea to renew my insurance and ragistration so off I went. The insurance was easy, all I had to do was phone TD Trust and have them set it up. Getting the registration for my truck was a little longer process. After making sure I had all the proper papers and information (something a lot of people don’t do) I made my way to the DMV. Unfortunately I didn’t get as lucky as I use to be, there was about 20 people ahead of me. I grabbed my number tab and decided to kill some time by wondering the mall all the while checking the time to make sure I wasn’t too long. Once back at the DMV it was a quick 5 minute wait and I was out of there.

Once home I put my mind on packing. First I washed my truck so it was nice and clean in order to get dirty tomorrow, then I slowly started to strategically pack my desk, bed frame, bed, bins of clothes and other junk.

Finally here we are 10om and everything is packed. Picture will be up in a day or too.

I hope to update here every evening as to where I am and what I am doing so make sure to check back.

Quickly Now, Quickly

Quick post I want to do before I head out to the Yellowknife/NWT Bloggers BBQ happing tonight.

Just some personal things I have been up to lately. So for those of you who couldn’t bare watching my video because of that stupid noise (I don’t blame you, hell I have only seen it once through) I will fill you in on what I said on it. I am no longer going to Fort St. John for college in the fall. I quit, gave up, will peruse begging. No Kidding. I’m actually going to a different campus, the one in Dawson Creek. Dawson Creek is about a hour south of Fort St. John and about 8000 people smaller making it only about 10,00 people. The reason I switched is because when I first started coming to the area it was to Dawson, so I am much more familiar with the town and would have preferred to go there all along but they didn’t offer my program there. They didn’t offer it there until 2 weeks ago when I was checking the schools website before officially registering for my courses, so when I saw they offered it now I was e-mailing and calling the school frantically to see if I could transfer. Finally I got through and did. Oddly enough about the time I found this all out I also found out that my friends that live about 45 minutes out of the town would now be working in town as well. Which is a wonderful surprise. I can now say I truly am looking forward to going to school, I just need a place to live…….

All of that was finalized yesterday right before I went out to Yellowknife’s “in town” campground for the night. For the last ten years I have always gone camping on May long weekend at least one night of the weekend. I wasn’t going to break that cycle. This year I had my little 12ft camper out there and even though it doesn’t have heat either it was much nicer than sleeping in a tent in the -10 weather we have been having. I try and recall when it has even been this cold on May long weekend but I simply can’t. We have fun sitting around the fire talking, but I think it was clear that we would be happier when it is warmer.

The reason I’m not going back out there tonight is because of the Bloggers BBQ that will be happening shortly, so I must go get ready.

See you all on the flip side.

Did South of 20 Actually Go South?

You know as much as I enjoy reading all the blogs and articles online I enjoy sitting down and picking up a newspaper. New Media may be taking over but old media still has something about it I like.

Now although some people have there “opinions” on the Yellowknifer and sometimes I do too, I still enjoy reading our little local paper. Today was no different, there were many articles in the paper today that were of interest. Mr. Humphries shared his thoughts on how we can avoid a recession by opening all dumps nation wide to salvagers. Shelagh Montgomery wants to take down the oil sands and make everyone walk everywhere let Alberta know that Yellowknife wants to halt the oil sands production with out thinking about all the jobs and money that would be lost. Then we had a bunch of other things, Rock & Ice Ultra, Headframe discussions, Caribou drinking Beer Caribou Carnivals Beer Garden and so on.

The one thing I love reading in a paper is the columns and opinions of people. I guess that just comes from being a blogger and doing the same thing. Reading someones views on something is not only informative but it give you a different perspective on the topic. Whether I agree with them or not I think about it. I go back to the quote I had in my last post. I write to not only entertain but to engage readers in discussion and make them think. That is what I want to be able to do as a writer blogger.

As I finished the paper and thought about all the things I had just read and who wrote them I only wondered what happened to the “South of 20” column. The weekly article that was write by a student or a person under the age of 20 hence the name South of 20. I said that I loved reading peoples columns and if there is one thing I love reading more than that it would be articles writen by young people. I think young people have more to offer than most think, I just think they don’t get the chance to say it. This is also why I try and encourage my friends to blog and vioce their opnions. Everyone has something to say they just need to find the right place to say it.
