Wildlife of Jasper, Alberta by KyleWith

Okay, I’m not a Wildlife Photographer, and I even have a hard time calling myself a photographer, but I sure was able to get up close to some wildlife in Jasper – as most people are.

I do have to tell you the story of the Bull Elk you see below. You see he was basically sitting in our campsite when we got up in one morning, along with some female elk and calves. My mom saw the calves, but not the bull, while I saw the bull. We both quickly scrambled to get our camera, I going for the bull, my mother for the calves. She started towards the calves, slowly and not to close, but as she did she unknowingly was getting closer to the bull. I didn’t realize she didn’t see the bull – there were tree and different angles, etc – and when I said “whoa mom, that is close enough” she realized what was beside her. Well apparently so did the protective bull. As we quickly stepped back to give it space, he worked his way to his up and then started charging every other camper, vehicle and dog that would go near his females. Now, if this were anywhere else I would have moved on, but since it was practically in our campsite and were breaking camp we stayed. They moved away from us, but they could still be seen.

This is my odd experience with this bull elk. The wolf was also neat to see, but I was trying to drive and shoot at the same time.

From a photography stand point, I would do many different things better – like getting out of the vehicle. The bull elk was the only one I could “choose” my location and even now looking at it, I should have lined it up better.

A Photo trip on Great Slave Lake

I have come to think one of the things I miss the most about Yellowknife and the north is the lakes. I don’t think I could live next to an ocean, but a fresh water lake I’m all over. I never realized how nice it was to be able to just drive down into Old Town and be right on the shore of Great Slave Lake. There is history down there and there is this peace that comes over me when we set out on the water.

I think space may have something to do with it. There are so many lakes around Yellowknife, it is easy to escape everyone else. Sure you may come across another boat in your favourite fishing spot, but if you go a bay over you will still catch amazing fish. There is nothing like it.

My time in Yellowknife this summer was short, about a week. I’ll miss it, but I was able to get out on the Lake once. Here are some photos of the afternoon.

Photos of the Drive to Yellowknife

Well with my last day in Yellowknife coming up fast I thought I should get around to sharing the photos I took on my way north. The drive was pretty smooth and enjoyable, you can watch the videos here and here.

The weather was really nice for most of the trip expect for in Enterprise where it was raining and there between Fort Providence and Rae where it was smokey.

Pictures on the Wall make my Home

I have been living in Fort St John over 8 months now and ever since moving I have been in a bit of a limbo. I am currently in my 3rd apartment, I know, bit much for only 8 months but that is the way it is. I never was able to settle into a place and make it my own.

I am now in my own apartment, it isn’t the most glamours place, but it is mine. I have slowly started furnishing it. Recently I bought a kitchen table and chair and a toaster. All I really need now is a couch to go with my chair.

Family Photos

It has actually been tough for me living in limbo. I’m a homebody, I love my home, I need a home. I like having a place I can retreat to when I need to. A place that is mine, that I can control.

Photos make a home more comforting to me, so over the weekend I printed off some photos. The photos if you hadn’t of guessed are of people. Oh and those people happen to be family.

Family Photos

Looking around my living room and see these photos, along with a bunch of other ones I put up, makes me feel like I’m in a real home again.

What makes your home, home for you?

HDR to the Max

Having liked HDR photography for a long time and slowly getting into it, I went a little over and beyond with these photos. Normally I don’t make them so harsh, but this time I kind of liked the way they looked.

I still haven’t mastered the technique, but it is coming along. There are things I want to improve about my HDR photos like quality, definition and colours.

What do you think so far though?
