Breaking Trail to Cabin

Tomorrow I think I will be breaking trail into the little cabin I use throughout the winter. I’m really looking forward to this winter and hoping to get out as much as possible.

The northern getaway has always appealed to me and for me it is just a matter of doing it. The great beyond is just beyond my backyard.

There is much I need to get prepped first though as I know the cabin will need some work. It is literally four walls and a bunk and that is even stretching it. The walls need work. Proper insolation in the corners.

My next step is to make a list of what I need out there. I’m also hoping to journal the project of getting out there and what it is like.

My parents made me shovel their driveway

I don’t mind of course but I think it quite coincidental that my parents left a mere two days ago for Airizona, just before the snow started to come.

They probably planned it perfectly to avoid the first major dumping of snow.

Conveniently this first snow was over a Friday night so Saturday morning was perfect for shovelling. Shoveling the driveway, the walkway to the back, the back patio and the deck. Okay I think my parents have to much that needs shovelling.

We had Thanksgiving at my house

For the past two years I have been away from home for Thanksgiving but I didn’t mind, I really enjoyed myself. Both times I was taken in by someone else and took part in what I call a Misfits Thanksgiving, where most of the people have no family in the community but come together with friends. I am very thankful for those people.

So this year I wanted to host my own. We had a small group of us who enjoyed the most amazing meal ever. I don’t think I have experienced a more relaxing day in a long time, than I did on that Saturday.

You will note in my many photos below that most of them have my good friend, James Rubec, in them. He was by the house most of the day prepping and cooking Roxanne, our turkey. While I wasn’t taking photos I cooked up several dishes of my own, there is just no evidence of that happening.

For the 6 of us we had so much food and my fridge is completely packed the morning after. Besides the turkey and stuffing that James cooked, I cooked my famous Scallop Potatoes and a Sweet Potato Pie… and bread that we forgot to eat. We also had maple glazed brussels sprouts, a nice fresh salad, a thanksgiving pizza and a homemade Pumpkin Cheese Cake.

The day, the food and the evening we all amazing. I’m thankful that it all happened.

I want to buy a house

It is deffinetly something I am working towards but one of the reasons I really want to buy a house is so I can make it as energy efficient and self-sustaining as possible.

For example a NEST thermostat. Read more about them at NEST.com

Wood Cutting outside of Yellowknife

I think I have said it before but the heat of a wood stove is my favourite type of heating in the cold winter nights but to be able to do that you have to get the wood somewhere.

My Dad and I went out past Behchoko, NWT yesterday morning to the spot he often frequents. I was testing out a new little trailer I got and we managed over a cord of wood in it. Driving into the bush to accomplish something is for more enjoyable to me that just going for a hike nowadays. The idea of driving through a forest of dead standing trees and cutting your way through is pretty exciting.

Now is the part where I get a little nostalgic. Since coming back to Yellowknife in January 2012 my relationship with my dad has grown to one I’m truly happy with. I now have my own life, house, vehicle, career, so that aside him and I can be friends and I can’t ask for anything better.

I admire this man. He is a machine. For a guy who has had two open heart surgeries, half a dozen seizure in the last decade and broken his neck, he still keeps going. I’m proud he is my dad, despite his quarks.

The funny part about this excursion was that it took us 3 hours to drive out to this spot and back but only an hour and a half to actually lay down, length and load the cord of wood. If we go out
