What not to do before coffee while camping.

While camping you sometimes have to get inventive with how you rig something up or fix something. This is not out of the ordinary, it is just a way of camping.

However there are something you shouldn’t do while camping, before you’ve had your morning coffee.

These things might included but are not limited too:

  • trying to make a mosquito coil stand on its own
  • packing a complicated tent up the way you found it
  • using spruce gum to fix sun glasses
  • just using a strike anywhere match in general
  • This is just a running list of some of the camp chores the are made hard to accomplish before caffeine has been injected into the system. There will be more added.

    No Caffeine For Me!

'Caffeine Weapon' photo (c) 2009, Nick Webb - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/I’d really like to know how caffeine works for some people because it doesn’t work for me.

Lately I have been going at things hard. I’m out of bed at 6am, at work by 7am, putting in 8ish hours there and then onto another project, then comes some downtime with dinner and then I get a second wind and back to working on something until 12am ish.

It is basically a go go go mentality for the entire time and very little of my energy has to do with caffeine.

I have seen coworkers come into the office and need that cup of coffee and need that caffeine boost before human interaction but I have no idea what that is like.

Lately I have tried to drink coffee in an attempt to improve my alertness in the morning but the fact of the matter is it does nothing. Whether I drink a cup or two of coffee does nothing for me. That being said first thing in the morning is my time to excel, I’m already high energy at that time.

Where I’m not is from about 12:30pm – 3:30pm, that is when I start to slow down before my second wind. I blame this on working 8 hours straight in an office through. I don’t go get the fresh air I should.

At the end of the day I do drink a diet pepsi or two, which I’m sure has some level of caffeine in it. But again I could drink one seconds before going to sleep and it wouldn’t effect me in the least.

So how I keep operating for 17-18ish hours a day I don’t know.

    A Coffee Shop For You

Like the two other towns I have lived in I have found my coffee shop. And by “my coffee shop” I mean a coffee shop in which I feel comfortable sitting and spending time in. In Yellowknife it was, obviously, Gourmet Cup, but I didn’t mind Javaroma either and in Dawson Creek it was Cafe Europa. Both were nice, relatively small and the owners were delightful to deal with.

Now I have found that here in Fort St John at a little shop called Patch Java. The shop was called Cosmic Grounds before new owner Devon Wrigglesworth reopened the space as Patch Java in May of 2010.

I admire owners like Devon, not to say the other coffee shop owners in town are different, I just haven’t met them yet. He is the type of owner that is at the forefront. Always working on the front line, serving customers, socializing and making sure that everyone is satisfied.

With a different lunch special everyday of the week, I don’t think I’m going to get bored of this place. Oh and did I mention the free WiFi, yeah that is good too.

The problem with me and coffee shops is I have the overwhelming urge to get behind the counter and make drinks. Not to boost or anything, but I make a damn good latte and with the proper jug I can even style it with some fancy latte art.

But I digress I’m am glad I have the skills but happy at with where I am currently. Although I do intent to start writing down all the drink special I have in my head. Muddy Snowman, Kyle’s Choc Chip Frozen Mocha, Haystack Latte, and so on.

A Coffee Shop is its own Community

I finally got bored of sitting at home as I have yet to go back to work (not my choosing) and decided to go down town. I needed to do some banking so it was an excellent excuse. I thought it would be relaxing if I took my computer and went to the Coffee Shop

    (Gourmet Cup) for the afternoon.

So here I am sitting in the corner hidden behind my computer. I can’t say I am really doing much, all I have been doing is reading feeds from my reader and watching people.

Yes, people watching. The regulars, the new comers and the staff who think I’m crazy for walking into the back to say hi to the owner. You must remember I worked here for 4 years and those 4 years weren’t just a job to me. A lot of people say they would never work a customer service job, I probably would again. I’m not going to lie at times it can be stressful, people in a hurry with a line going out the door. But any job will have it challenges, right? Once I got the hang of it and was able to work efficiently I began to enjoy the atmosphere more than anything. I could build relationships with loyal customers, talk, joke and learn from them.

I’m sure like any other Coffee Shop the local gossip was always in the air. I remember this was where I first heard about NWTBlogs. You would always hear about who had passed away, who was getting married or what was going on in the community. It would never be a dull moment.

Although running a business it 10 times harder than just working for one. The thought of one day running The Gourmet Cup had entered my mind as I will be going to school for business. One can dream, and this dream may not actually be to far off from reality. The owner will be retiring in a couple years, enough time for me to build up some experience. But Who Knows. Anything can happen.

Readers: What is a Coffee Shop to you? I know some of you go to them regularly, so let me know!

    Props to Amy

As we all know NWT Blogs was down for a couple of day there. If you hadn’t heard the domain had expired for the site because it has been a year since its been live. Doesn’t seem it, and in that short time we have created a small community of bloggers that have become friends online.

I would like to thank Amy for what she has done, with out her I don’t think I would get the hits on my blog that I do. Even though I have only had my blog on the site for a couple months I have been following it since the beginning. I remember talking to Megan about the site when the article came out in “Name of Paper Withheld” (as she would call it) in the coffee shop last February.

I see many great things to come for the site, and even just after it came back online I noticed that there were a whole whack more bloggers on the site. I can’t wait to check them all out.
