Wildlife of Jasper, Alberta by KyleWith

Okay, I’m not a Wildlife Photographer, and I even have a hard time calling myself a photographer, but I sure was able to get up close to some wildlife in Jasper – as most people are.

I do have to tell you the story of the Bull Elk you see below. You see he was basically sitting in our campsite when we got up in one morning, along with some female elk and calves. My mom saw the calves, but not the bull, while I saw the bull. We both quickly scrambled to get our camera, I going for the bull, my mother for the calves. She started towards the calves, slowly and not to close, but as she did she unknowingly was getting closer to the bull. I didn’t realize she didn’t see the bull – there were tree and different angles, etc – and when I said “whoa mom, that is close enough” she realized what was beside her. Well apparently so did the protective bull. As we quickly stepped back to give it space, he worked his way to his up and then started charging every other camper, vehicle and dog that would go near his females. Now, if this were anywhere else I would have moved on, but since it was practically in our campsite and were breaking camp we stayed. They moved away from us, but they could still be seen.

This is my odd experience with this bull elk. The wolf was also neat to see, but I was trying to drive and shoot at the same time.

From a photography stand point, I would do many different things better – like getting out of the vehicle. The bull elk was the only one I could “choose” my location and even now looking at it, I should have lined it up better.

So Steve Jobs has resigned

As pathetic as it may sound, when I first read that Steve Jobs had resigned yesterday afternoon I was taken aback. This all the tragic news this past week has possessed, I thought I was reading Steve’s last words (kind of like Jack Layton), but alas it was just a resignation letter. I was still taken back though.

I don’t follow the day to day workings of Apple so I’m sure with Tim Cooke at the helm it will all be fine, but there was still a nagging feeling in me that thought, if Steve Jobs leaves Apple will follow apart. And, yes, I know this sounds rather pathetic and I’m sure it makes me look like much more of a fanboy, but the way Apple was presented sometimes made it seems like Steve watched over everything.

What will happen in the next decade with Apple, will it become a big clunky company like Microsoft or will stay on top with it sleek looking, easy to use products. Time will only tell.

Simple Camp Life

Camp Life

Camp life for me is a simple life. A Tent and a Camp box. Oh and lets not forget the computer, but it actually reality, I do like the simple things. (On a side note it is not raining and my computer is getting wet so I will cut this short)

This was my first time trying a long exposure during the night and I like how it turned out. One this I would like to try, is doing it earlier in the evening and trying to pick up some of the background.

I was jealous of the young couples

When I arrived in the Jasper campground, Whistler, I was jealous of all the young couples I was seeing around. They all looked happy together and ready to explorer together. I was envious, but that is not to say I am not enjoying myself, because I certainly am and I am cherishing every moment with my mother. This evening though I’m not so jealous anymore…

Across from our little site a group of 2 early 20’s “kids” pulled in with a toddler. They have been play yelling and shouting since they got here. And I’m sorry, I may be a 80-year-old man inside, but I think it is rude and disrespectful to be that loud in a campground with many other people. It doesn’t matter what age. Then of course there is the yappy dog beside the other folks, barking at every little bug that flies by. Seriously, it scared off all the elk.

Anyways, this is home base for this evening, prepped for the rain tomorrow.

Ice Cream Man is waiting

Like I mentioned, on Google+, I want to do more random portraits of people and here is the first. I still am dealing with the huge fact that I’m to shy to go up and ask to take a person if I can take their photo, but I hope to over come soon.

I believe this man was waiting for his wife as she shopped along the main drag of Jasper Alberta. He looked at peace, with his ice cream.

This photo was inspired by the photographer, Thomas Leuthard, who is a “street photographer” and writes 85mm.ch. I like his style and it was why I I wanted to explore the random portraits more. ISO 100, 50mm, f/3.5, 0.0004.
